Third Grade Programming for Art is Education Schools

A National Arts-Integrated Literacy Initiative
Third graders in Art is Education schools participate in Arts for Learning, a research-based curriculum developed by Young Audiences that includes flexible, teacher-led instructional units, connected to artist residencies that use the arts to improve students' literacy skills. Arts for Learning builds the capacity of classroom teachers to find meaningful connections between specific art forms and the Language Arts curriculum. Program components include:
- Professional development
- Arts-integrated lessons taught by classroom teachers
- Teaching artist residencies with Young Audiences (YA) professional teaching artists
- Program planning, coaching and final program assessment and analysis with YA staff
Arts for Learning Literacy Units:
- Are designed for classroom teachers with little or no arts experience
- Meet Ohio Academic Content Standards in English Language Arts and Fine Arts
- Combine carefully selected arts strategies with important literacy objectives in reading and writing so that the arts naturally leverage literacy learning
- Are supported by independent research that demonstrates increased student abilities and understanding of essential literacy skills
Teachers receive:
- 3-hour professional development session with YANEO staff on basic arts skills and use of unit materials and arts strategies in their classrooms
- Resource binder and unit materials for classroom instruction
- Set of published texts for the classroom
Students receive:
- Notebooks with embedded assessment tools
- Copies of texts to support instruction
